Mountain Bike Tours

Bike Sprite is no longer guiding mountain bike rides.

Bike Sprite established our guiding business based on a verbal Yes from the recreation staff for the largest land manager on whose forest the majority of the trails exist – Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF). That verbal Yes turned into an approval to guide just two times a year, which unfortunately is not financially sustainable. We have had a tremendous outpouring of support from the MTB community and beyond (even our US Senator chimed in) in our efforts to expand from two rides to regular concession guiding. In the end, it is up to the Forest Manager, who – though very supportive of mountain biking in general – is not supportive of regular concession guiding on our Forest.

While we had believed that there were enough trails off of JDSF to sustain a guiding business, at this time, there are not. We all want to ride in Jackson and Jackson is closed to regular concession guiding. In the meantime, we may have up to two events per year on JDSF, which includes guiding and races. The costs of guiding are prohibitive for such a small opportunity to share our mountain bike landscape with you in that manner. If this ever changes, you’ll hear it around the MTB community.

Ironically, CalFire, which operates JDSF, would rather have Bike Sprite produce a weekend-long race for 350 mountain bike racers than guide visiting riders throughout the year, averaging 1 to 4 guests at a time.
